Announcing v3 Beta of Aviary Photo Editor for Web!

We’re proud to announce the new and improved v3.0 of our Web Editor! It’s available right now as a beta so you can start updating your integration today. It looks beautiful, includes some awesome new features, and runs more smoothly than ever!

Note: All current web partners should read the integration details below to make sure you don’t break your current integrations.

Aviary Web Editor v3 Beta

v3 Highlights

  • Gorgeous, streamlined interface: better customization for you, and improved performance for your users
  • Improved a number of tools, including Enhance, Crop, Draw, and Text
  • Improved the top and bottom toolbars of the editor: tool name displayed above, image size below the photo
  • Removed last page (feedback/get this editor) from top toolbar
  • Greatly improved general performance and responsiveness
  • Note: We are officially dropping support for IE7. It’s less than 1% of our web usage, and after talking to a sample of our partners it seems like most of you are dropping IE7 as well. If you still require support for IE7, get in touch and we can discuss your options.

How to Update!

  1. API Keys
As of v3, API keys are now required. If you don’t have one yet, you can grab one from aviary.com/web.

  2. Beta URL
In your testing environment, replace http://feather.aviary.com/js/feather.js with the beta url http://feather.aviary.com/js/feather_beta.js or grab a new code snippet from one of our sample pages: dark theme | light theme. Do not release this url to your production environment, as it is a beta and contains a special feedback button for your testers.

  3. apiVersion Number
Once you’ve pointed to feather_beta.js, you can change the apiVersion configuration parameter to 3. See the sample page above for an example.

  4. Updating on Production
On July 15th, you’ll be able to change the apiVersion to 3 on the production feather.js to upgrade immediately. Additionally, the new default value for apiVersion will change to 3 on this date, so make sure you’ve set the parameter to 2 if you want to remain on v2 of the editor past July 15th.
Note: On September 16th, version 2 will be deprecated and apiVersion will be forced to 3 for all integrations.) If you’re currently doing anything anything unsupported, make sure you test your custom CSS and update to v3 before you are forced into it in September! See our Timeline below for instructions for staying on v2 past that date.

  5. Customization
Start with the dark or light default theme and customize the editor from there. If you’re currently doing anything anything unsupported with CSS we highly recommend removing any existing customization and starting fresh with the new version (this should be much easier than tweaking existing code – a lot has changed!).

  6. minimumStyling
If you’d like to take it one step further and build your own theme for the editor, you can use the minimumStyling configuration with either the dark or light theme. That said, we highly recommend building on top of one of our default themes, as those come with built in transitions, hover states, etc – try them out, they feel really nice.

Timeline

  • Now: v3 beta is available via a special beta url. See above for details.
  • July 15th: v3 will officially be released. The apiVersion parameter will default to 3 if it isn’t specified. To remain on v2 past this date, make sure to set apiVersion to 2.
  • September 16th: v2 will be deprecated entirely. Hardcoded apiVersion numbers will no longer be valid. If you need to stay on v2 past this date please contact us.

We’re looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Cheers, Aviary

Could the Stickiest Form of Mobile Brand Engagement be Stickers?

Last April, we took a cue from our third screen savvy friends in Japan and launched one of Aviary’s first special edition sticker packs. As part of a creative partnership with Atlantic Records, we teamed up with the visual artist John Gourley (aka the multi-talented frontman of exploding band Portugal. The Man) to design a perfect photo editing feature for fans – something that would both connect fans with the band and give them something really, really fun to do (and share).

In Japan, where brands have been distributing branded digital sticker packs in messaging and photo apps for about a year (often to coincide with releases of their infamously good commercials), this interactive and social medium has a strong reputation as a powerful third screen marketing and engagement strategy. And after our first five experiments with stickers outperformed normal iOS CTRs by an average 1100%, we could definitely understand why (email me for case studies).

StickerPost_Aviary

Now – before I go any further – let me explain something about “stickers,” because whatever you’re visualizing when you read that, you’re probably wrong:

A few years ago, digital stickers were a lot like everyday stickers. You know, like the ones your kindergarten teacher would shell out as a reward for turning in your homework on time. As a result, using these stickers on digital photos was like a Martha Stewart craft gone off a cliff – all cartoony, a little cheesy, and maybe best reserved for kids.

But these days – thanks to some very talented designers and some very advanced technology – stickers aren’t really stickers anymore, they’re just incredibly easy ways to realistically “superimpose” elements into your picture (and/or communicate complex emotions in one click). With stickers like these, you can make your house look 2000 years old. You can make a convincing album of that time you flew to space on the very first Virgin Galactic flight (wink wink). And of course, you can make your picture look like John Gourley drew his doodles all over it, in exactly that way that he’s known to do.

Before and After - Galaxy Stickers Aviary

For people that love editing pictures, this sticker revolution means that you can now create the sort of ridiculous images that only the most talented digital artists used to be capable of, in seconds (for another great example of that, check out the Dead Yourself app). For brands, it means that with the right strategy, you can empower a huge audience to create awesome content on your behalf. And for the rest of us, it probably means that we’re going to be seeing a lot more of them.

You definitely will be in Aviary; in fact, check out your “sticker” feature right now, and you’ll find three (free!) special edition sticker packs – all brought to you by brands and bands* that are savvy enough to understand how you really engage with your mobile phone, and see value in meeting you on that level. Special edition packs in Aviary have already been downloaded close to four million times, and we have no doubt that our users prefer it to more traditional mobile advertising – where average CTRs still hover around  0.86%.

On that note, we are massively grateful to the innovative brands and agencies that have already stepped into this new territory with us. To the fine folks at Digital Kitchen, Gap, Diane von Fustenberg, H&M, Redbull, Starcom and Atlantic Records: you are brave, bold, and great at what you do, and we’re so honored that you’ve trusted us to get your feet wet. Thank you!

*Yes, Portugal. The Man fans, your beloved stickers are back this week. So you can stop emailing us.

Snap Cat for Best Use of Aviary at Photo Hack Day Berlin

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of presenting Aviary’s API and judging at Photo Hack Day Berlin, organized by our friends at EyeEm.

The event was kicked off Saturday morning with the usual parade of API presentations, followed by team pitches. More than 120 developers and designers spent the next 24 hours turning endless cups of coffee and bottles of Club-Mate into 37 beautiful photo hacks.

One of the standouts, Makiary, was a hardware hack by Hany Rizk that allowed users to apply Aviary photo filters to a photo by tapping a piece of paper with a button drawn on it.

Another favorite was Snap Cat, “an app for cats, by cats”, which won for best use of the Aviary API! The app shows a red ball bouncing on the screen. When your cat tries to grab the ball, it takes a photo which you can edit using the Aviary SDK before sharing with your friends. “Because if the internet needs more of anything, it’s cats”. The app is already live in the Google Play Store, and there’s even a web version that you can try out here. Congratulations to Danielle, Lukasz, Matias, Tobi, Victor for Snap Cat!

SnapCat

1st Place: Photoration

See a photo that you love and want to take yourself? Photoration might be able to help you out. One of the apps pitched after the opening API demos, Photoration allows users to choose a beautiful photo using the EyeEm API, and shows that photo on a map with instructions on which direction to face, and what time of day to take it. Congrats to Albert Poghosyan, Stefan Adolf, Robert Tochman-Szewc and Gabriele Negro for Photoration!

2nd Place: Ambeer

Ambeer has “nothing to do with beer other than that it’s from me”. A psychedelic hardware hack, Ambeer uses Imagga’s API to extract the five primary colors from a photo and creates a light show using a hand-built, usb-connected lighting stack. Congrats to Christian Male for Ambeer!

3rd Place: DIGITALANALOG

DIGITALANALOG is an art project by Alan Don Jones. A hack in two parts, DIGITALANALOG explores the intersection of digital vs analog photography and our interactions with both mediums. The first part explores representing animated GIF’s as an analog Polaroid photograph. Part two explores how a camera flash could be manipulated to re-create digital effects. Alan managed to replicate certain EyeEm photo filters using bits of trash taped to an iPhone flash. You can find the full gallery here. Congrats to Alan Don Jones for DIGTALANALOG!

Photo Hack Day Berlin was a ton of fun, and I was very inspired by the technical prowess and creativity coming out of the Berlin tech scene. A big thank you EyeEm for hosting an amazing event!

With more than 50 Million Monthly Active Users, Aviary now heads to Japan!

Big news: more than 50 million people have made their pictures look awesome with Aviary’s Photo Editor in the last 30 days*. That’s a huge milestone to reach – and represents 100% growth in the last six months.

In total, we have now helped people edit more than 4 billion photos.

Of course, those 50 million people use Aviary not just in our own showcase apps, but across partner apps like Flickr, Pic Stitch, Tango and many more.  In fact, as I write this post and check our analytics dashboard, I’m seeing 4,662 partners currently live with Aviary integration. That’s up from 3,500 in March.

So that huge milestone of 50MM MAUs also comes with a huge amount of responsibility. We can’t thank our 4,662 partners enough for the trust they put in Aviary every day to power their apps and provide their users with top class photo editing tools, filters, frames and stickers. We promise to keep working hard and smart to push our products even further, even faster, trying with every new release to delight partners and their users around the globe.

And that term, “around the globe,” now means even more to Aviary because in June… we’ll have our first international presence… in Tokyo, Japan.

AviaryOfficeAsia2

This year, we’ve seen huge demand from users and partners right across Asia. Partners are taking advantage of our localized SDK for photos and stickers, and are also working with us to create custom content for their users.

mixiscreens

We already have fantastic partnerships with companies like Mixi, one of the biggest social networks in Japan, so it makes perfect sense for Aviary to put feet on the street in Tokyo and start serving the region from there. We’re also planning to host Photo Hack Day 5 in Japan sometime in the Fall – to say a big THANK YOU (ありがとうございます!) to all the developers who have worked with us so far, and to say a big HELLO (こんにちは) to new friends who we hope will work us in the near future.

Exciting times! Keep an eye on this blog for more news soon…

Aviary Winners at NASA International Space Apps Challenge

On April 20-21st, NASA held it’s second annual International Space Apps Challenge. Over 8,000 participants worldwide competed to solve 58 challenges ranging from “Backyard Poultry Farmer” which asked challengers to create a PMS (Poultry Management System) for backyard farmers, to “Hitch a Ride to Mars”, a challenge to design a CubeSat for an upcoming Mars mission, and everything in between.

The event was kicked off by a welcome video from NASA reps pumping up the crowd, and a shoutout from last years winner, Sam Wilkinson, a 16-year-old from Oxford who figured out how to bake bread in space.

Over the the next 24 hours, 200 hackers hunkered down at the AlleyNYC location, keyboards a-clackin, soldering irons ablaze, on a noble mission to democratize space exploration for NYC.s

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 5.47.10 PM

Come Sunday afternoon, there were 21 hacks ready to go at NYC HQ. Hacks like Space Races, which helps children simulate a space mission by allowing them to choose the delivery vehicle, propulsion type, and whether the mission is manned or not, and then shows actual NASA footage of the liftoff. Another app, Spot the Station, allows people to check into the International Space Station on Foursquare when it’s overhead.

One of the most dynamic hacks of the weekend was “Astroid Mapper,” a CubeSat for Astroid Exploration built by a team of 13. With parts stripped from a Parrot AR Drone, gesture control a la Leap Motion, and an onboard spatial mapping Xbox Kinect, we all watched in horror and amazement as the quad copter on steroids flew up and down the room mapping it’s interior before doing a barrel roll towards judges with a casual gesture from the the presenter. Needless to say, “Astroid Mapper” was a bit of a crowd favorite.

In the end, Judges David Hochman (Tech Consultant), Jennifer Gustetic (Prizes Program Executive at NASA), Ron Garan (Astronaut), and Liz Barry (Director of Urban Environment at the Public Laboratory of Open Technology) made the difficult decision to pick 2 submissions that will go on to compete for the international prize. The NYC Space Apps Challenge winners are:

  • Ilyass Garara, Soumia Lebbal, and Amine Benabdeljalil for MySpaceCal – a beautiful mobile app for amateur astronomers that offers a user-friendly calendar for finding out when and where satellites will be.
  • Ankur Oberoi and Phil Reichenberger for Tiny Sea Bots – a Leap Motion controller and tunnel for controlling an OpenROV undersea rover from across the globe.

Le Big Blue

The Aviary API prize, an Arduino + Camera + MicroSD snapon, went to Le Big BLue, which aimed to solve The Blue Marble challenge. A team of 4 intrepid high school students from P-Tech built a website that makes NASA space imagery and meta data more social and accessible by offering image editing (via Aviary) and sharing functionality to your favorite social networks. Congratulations to Rahat Mahmud (10th Grade), Nicholas Allman (10th Grade), Nikolas Rassoule (9th Grade) and Gabe Rsa (10th Grade) for Le Big Blue!

NYC Organizers Mike Caprio and Alice Ng also deserve a big shout out for putting together what looks to have been the largest Space Apps Challenge to date, and for one of the most exciting hackathons we’ve had the pleasure of attending.

For a more detailed rundown of the event, check out Julian Taub’s writeup on Motherboard.

If you’re in NYC and looking for a hackathon to attend this weekend, check out the “Healthy Living and Lifelong Learning” BigAppsNYC Hackathon taking place this Saturday, May 4th at the Huffington Post.

Aviary iOS SDK Deep Dive: v3 Customizer app for OSX

Alongside version 3.0.0 of our editor, Aviary is introducing the iOS SDK Customizer. It is an entirely new, simple way to customize the appearance of our iOS SDK. The Customizer is an OS X application that allows both developers and designers to experiment with and perfect their integration with instant visual feedback.

Visual customization of our editor has always been an important part of the iOS SDK. We understand that partners want a seamless transition between their app’s interface and ours. In previous versions of our editor, this customization was done completely at runtime. Developers would provide colors and images in code that would be used to customize the various UI elements of the editor.

Code

This methodology had several drawbacks. First, the need to enter values at the code level meant that designers could not customize the editor themselves. Additionally, we received developer feedback that the old, key-based system for setting individual options was oftentimes confusing. It was not clear which keys would affect which elements of the UI. With the Customizer, we have solved both of these issues by removing the code level, key-based system from the SDK and moved all visual customization into the Customizer. Additionally, we have included a WYSIWYG preview section to the SDK Customizer so that setting a color for a particular UI element has instant feedback. Further, customization profiles can be exported, allowing designers to perform the visual customization themselves and then share the profile with a developer to include in their app.

Screen Shot 2013-04-16 at 6.17.38 PM

Screen Shot 2013-04-16 at 6.17.51 PM

In addition to easing integration, the customizer has allowed us to optimize the iOS SDK, making it leaner and faster. In previous versions of the SDK, visual customization was done by reading custom color and image values provided by developers and then drawing UI elements as the editor launched. Although we aggressively cached previously drawn UI, there was significant overhead associated with drawing the many elements that made up the SDK’s interface. This manifested itself in the form of a slight pause before the editor or a given tool would launch, especially noticeable on older devices.

When beginning to work on v3.0.0 of the SDK, we approached building the gorgeous new UI with the same runtime configurability methodology. However, it quickly became apparent that the new design contained too many details that required customization and using our old method for customization rendered the SDK unacceptably slow. We decided that the only way to move forward with the new UI would be to pre-render all of the SDK’s assets with the customized color scheme.

Re-building the SDK in this way had numerous advantages. First, it enabled us to more faithfully recreate our product team’s vision for the new UI by allowing us to use assets cut by our designers in Photoshop. We were also able to remove almost all drawing using Core Graphics from the SDK, comprising several thousand lines of code. Removing this drawing improved both UI responsiveness and initial launch speed by reducing the CPU’s load for rendering the UI. To illustrate how much more efficient the new customization scheme is, we have estimated that nearly 150 billion assets have been rendered on devices using v2 of the Editor in partner apps across our network. With the v3 of the Editor and the SDK Customizer, assets are never rendered on the device.

The entire team at Aviary hopes that the Customizer will make your lives easier and the new SDK, with its sleek new UI and improved performance, will delight your users. As always, we appreciate your questions and feedback, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch: support@aviary.com.
