Print Aviary Photos Straight to Walgreens from iOS – Plus Toy Camera Effects and Galaxy Stickers

Aviary's Galaxy Stickers

Galaxy Stickers

Starting today, users of our iOS Showcase app (Photo Editor by Aviary - the app we use as a testing ground for our photo editing SDK) can print their photos directly to any participating Walgreens location and pick up their prints the very same day with our brand new release, version 1.5.1. We absolutely love digital photography, but there’s nothing quite like holding a physical photo, so we’re thrilled to offer this feature. The integration is seamless and it takes literally seconds to complete a prints order. Best of all, you don’t have to pay for your prints until you pick them up at Walgreens, so there’s no need to enter any credit card info.

Walgreens is offering a 25% discount* on prints for Aviary users. Just enter promo code PARTNER25 on checkout.

Toy Camera Effects

Toy Camera Effects

We also created some amazing new content for you guys in 1.5.1. In our last release we introduced an awesome stickers pack called Space, which let users add planets, stars, and comets to their photos. The stickers were such a hit that we decided to make a more, only this time went a little deeper into the galaxy. This new pack, appropriately named Galaxy, features nebulae, bursts, and a bunch of other cool galactic imagery. Check it out.

For Effects, we took inspiration from toy cameras and plastic lenses to create a pack that adds distortion, light leaks, and cool colors to any photo. We’re calling this pack (to no one’s surprise) Toy Camera, and we’re pretty obsessed with it (you should see how many photos we’ve run through the Amber effect). We think you will be too.

We’ve also addressed some important stability and performance issues with 1.5.1, which should be helpful for a handful of users who were experiencing some occasional problems with saving their images.

So check out the release and let us know what you think! We’d love to hear your feedback. If you edit some really sweet photos with the Toy Camera effects or Galaxy stickers and you’d like to share them with us, hit us up on Twitter.

*Coupon code PARTNER25 valid thru March 31, 2013 on the Walgreens Mobile Partner application only. Code must be entered in the mobile app quick prints checkout flow to apply discount. Timing will be determined by Walgreens server clock. Discount does not apply to previous purchases or taxes. Cannot be combined with any other offer. Offer valid on the Walgreens Mobile Partner application only. Walgreens reserve the right to expire the offer at any time.  In store sales associates reserve the right to monitor and prevent offer abuse.

More Android Action from Aviary: New Effects and Frames in SDK 2.2.1

In the spirit of keeping things moving in 2013, we have yet another Android announcement: version 2.2.1 of our Android SDK has been released. This is a massive update, and if you’re an Android developer thats using Aviary’s SDK to bring beautiful photo editing functionality to your users, you want to get your hands on this. Aviary's Brand New Effects

Let us fill you in on what we’ve added. To start, we’ve completely reworked the Effects tool. We found that users didn’t care about effects categories, they just wanted to get right into the actual effects and start adding them to their photos.  So we removed the effects canister screen, completely eliminating a step from the process. We also redesigned the 12 default effects that come with the tool to be more subtle and just generally way more usable.  We tested this change in our Showcase app back in December and saw a massive spike in usage, so we’re confident your users are going to love this. Make sure you check out the Avenue, Cruz, and Clyde effects – our users have really been digging these.

Aviary's Antique Frame

We’ve also added a brand new Frames tool. Users were tired of being forced to use certain frames with certain effects, so we pulled the two apart and gave Frames its own tool. To start, the tool features 12 beautiful frames, and we’ll be adding more all the time. So far, the Antique, Splatter, and Grit frames have all been the most popular in our Showcase app.

Lastly, we’ve taken care of some necessary business with this release, cleaning up an Orientation tool bug, adding support for x86, and changing the way you need to pass your API-KEY to the SDK (definitely consult README.MD for more info on this one).

Have you implemented version 2.2.1 into your own app? What do you think of the new effects and frames? Let us know in the comments below.

Android Love from Aviary to Kick Off 2013

Good news: we just pushed out a brand new version of Photo Editor by Aviary for Android. It’s our first release of 2013, and you can grab it now from Google Play for free.

Photo Editor By Aviary for Android - Orientation Tool

This new release updates a few of our favorite features, and addresses a number of annoying bugs. The Meme Tool, Text Tool, and Orientation Tool have all been updated to resolve some minor issues. Meanwhile, the Output Folder Setting (this is what allows users to choose where we save their photos) now operates as advertised again (ahem!).

We think of the Aviary-branded apps, both for iOS and Android, as our “Showcase Apps” – because they showcase all the great things our developer partners can offer their users when they work with Aviary. This includes our beautiful effects, one-click photo enhance, super-fun stickers, crop, draw, and more – you name it, we’ve probably got a tool for it.

Releasing new versions of our Aviary Showcase Apps means we get to test drive updates to these awesome tools and any new features with millions of photo-obsessed users. This allows us to gather real-life user feedback, prove (or disprove) some of our hypothesis and, occasionally, iron out any wrinkles before delivering technology to our developer partners via our SDK.

If you’ve checked out Photo Editor and would like to give us some feedback, please let us know in the comments below. We’d love to know what you think!

A Holiday Present to Fans of Aviary’s Retired Advanced Suite

Happy Holidays! I have some really exciting news for the fans of Aviary’s retired advanced flash suite – specifically for fans of the cult favorite photo manipulation tool, Peacock.

We granted its original developer, code artist Mario Klingemann, a license to continue development of Peacock independently. And in a show of holiday spirit, he got it ready for you on Christmas day. He has re-christened the tool as Nodewerk and turned it into an AIR application that can be downloaded and run directly from your computer, even without an Internet connection!

Just to give you an idea of the kinds of incredible images that can be made, check out this incredible Flickr gallery by former Aviator extraordinaire, Mike Peutz (better known as mpeutz). Click through for the full gallery.

All of these photos were generated from scratch using code alone.

And here’s a tutorial video by Mike showing Peacock in action (please note that Nodewerk no longer connects to the Aviary website to let users edit each others’ compositions).

Mike even built a beautiful website and forum to showcase and share your new Nodewerk creations.

On a personal note, I can’t tell you how happy I am to be able to see an incredible piece of software like this rise from the ashes. Mario and the team that worked on Aviary’s advanced flash suite worked so hard on Peacock and it’s great to know that a true gem like this will be out there in the world helping to make the world a better looking place once more.

So what are you waiting for?! Go download it now and make beautiful things!

Welcome to Tobias Peggs, the new CEO of Aviary!

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER

I’m excited to announce that Tobias Peggs has joined the Aviary flock as our new CEO!

Aviary is taking off in ways I never dreamed possible when we adjusted our strategy and launched our photo-editing SDK 15 months ago. We now have more than 25 million monthly active users of Aviary’s products, making their photos look amazing across our distribution network of 2,500 partners. We have an incredible portfolio of partners including large corporations like Yahoo!, Walgreens, Box and Twitter and many successful indie companies like imgur, PicStitch and Juicy Bits. One year after launching, in September 2012, we celebrated editing our 1 billionth photo. Just a few months later, we’re now celebrating passing 2 billion edits. It’s been a great year. But we’re just getting started…

As we move forward, it has become clear to me that the company’s accelerating growth is now bringing us into territory that is best handled by someone with a very specific set of skills and experiences tailored to match our B2B strategy. Tobias has deep experience managing accelerated growth in B2B startups, which makes him the perfect leader for Aviary as it really takes off.

Most recently, Tobias was CEO at OneRiot, managing that company’s transition from consumer to B2B, overseeing its growth and subsequent acquisition by Walmart. There are many specific elements in his background that are highly relevant to Aviary’s business:

  • At OneRiot, he drove fast growth in the business through the distribution of SDKs and business models to a large community of developers.
  •  At Walmart, he was responsible for mobile products in international markets, growing the UK market from zero to 50% of typical weekly global mobile revenue inside 12 months.
  •  He has built and managed large teams across the globe, having previously worked in the US, Europe and Asia.

But beyond his understanding of our developer-focused business, also importantly, he understands what we are doing emotionally. As a former Managing Editor of i-D Magazine, he has a deep appreciation for photography and creativity, which is critical to our culture and mindset at Aviary.

Tobias has been a mentor of mine for almost a year now. Shortly after Aviary changed its business strategy to focus on powering third party apps, one of our investors, Mo Koyfman from Spark Capital, introduced me to Tobias. He had a wealth of leadership knowledge that really impressed me and helped me think through our approach to the business as we grew our partnership base. I am certain that those conversations helped steer Aviary towards its current level of success.

Going forward, I will be Aviary’s Chief Product Officer, focusing on continuing to make Aviary’s product offering the most innovative and pure solution on the market. And in my continued role as Chairman, I’ll make sure the company course stays true on the path towards democratizing creativity.

I’m excited to get the opportunity to work even more closely with a mentor. It represents the opportunity to turn Aviary from a startup with incredible potential into a significant, growing business under Tobias’ leadership.

So I’d like to officially welcome Tobias to the flock. We’ll fly to great places together, as birds of a feather tend to do.

~ Avi

I JOINED AVIARY TODAY AS THE COMPANY’S CEO

I joined Aviary today as the company’s CEO, and I couldn’t be more excited. Here’s why:

Aviary has built the best SDK for photo editing, sharing and monetization. More than 2,500 developers already use that SDK in apps across mobile, tablet and web. In November, Aviary saw 25m unique end users across that developer network. On Thanksgiving Day alone, Aviary’s technology helped edit and share more than 15m photos. Meanwhile the company has just topped 2bn total photos edited (up from 1bn as reported in September).

Those are big numbers, showing significant growth, and indicating real traction. Partners like Flickr, MailChimp and Walgreens agree, having integrated Aviary into their offerings. Last week, Twitter joined that roll call. Likewise, Aviary is the go-to photo platform partner for many and varied indie devs, including Muzy, Palringo and Recipe Search.

When you get to know the company, it’s easy to see how they got to this position. A) the team that’s been put together to date is awesome and B) the core product rocks. If you’re a developer, and you’re thinking “photos”, you’re likely thinking “Aviary”.

For about a year, I’ve been talking with Aviary’s co-founders Avi and Iz about the B2B direction they’ve been taking their company. We’ve always clicked as people, and I love their big vision of democratizing creativity. Likewise we’ve talked for days about the business potential, especially in the context of a mobile photo space that already seems huge but is really only just getting started.

Last month, they asked me to join the company. Through our conversations, it became apparent that some of the experiences I’ve been through and the lessons I’ve learned in my career – especially when CEO of OneRiot – would complement Avi and Iz’s strengths as they sought to scale their business and better serve their developer community.

One of the hardest decisions startup founders can ever make is to bring in an outside CEO. The fact that Avi and Iz were so clear on why they wanted to do that now was very impressive and compelling. In addition, having Mo Koyfman from Spark Capital as Aviary’s lead investor was also a plus. Spark was the lead in OneRiot. They, like me, see the benefit in getting the band back together.

So here we are: Avi, Iz, me, a very talented flock at Aviary’s NYC HQ, and a board full of brain power, ready to help our developer community create and monetize the best photo apps possible for their users, while taking this company to the next level and beyond.

I’d encourage you now to install Aviary’s showcase apps on iOS and Android to see the core product in action, and to start using the service through one or many of Aviary’s partners. Also, keep an eye on the Aviary blog and follow Aviary on Twitter for more product, partner and feature announcements – there’s a lot of very cool stuff just around the corner. Meanwhile, we’re hiring!

As I said, I couldn’t be more excited. I feel very fortunate to be joining such a top team who’ve created a great product that is loved by so many developers and photo takers around the world. Now… it’s time to get to work.

Aviary is Now Powering Twitter’s Photo Filters and Effects

We’re extremely proud to announce that we’re now powering the photo filters and effects for our newest partner, Twitter.

Aviary’s mission is to democratize the world’s creativity. We accomplish this by helping millions of people express themselves through the photos they share every day: so it’s really fulfilling to partner with Twitter and give its huge network an even more powerful way to communicate. After several months of working on and testing these new features with the Twitter team, we’re excited to finally get them in the hands of the Twitter community.

Together we’ve created a unique experience that makes it easier than ever for people to create and share photos on Twitter, in real time. Each filter was designed from the ground up exclusively for Twitter, and we couldn’t be more excited about how they turned out. We designed these features so that it is very easy to add new and elegant filters to the photos that people share using Twitter’s mobile apps for iPhone and Android.

So we hope you enjoy our work. It’s a significant feather in our cap as we continue to add to our distribution network of over 2,500 partners, who enable more than 25 million people to use Aviary’s photo editing technology each month. Collectively, we have helped people edit almost 2 billion photos in the last year.

We want to power the photo editing experience of every mobile and web app on the planet.

Today, Twitter. Tomorrow, the rest of the world.
